A Google Business Profile audit should answer two questions: can customers trust the information they see, and can the organization control every profile that represents its brand? The checklist below is designed for branch networks, franchises and service-area businesses.
1. Confirm ownership and access
- List every profile, including duplicates, old branches and unverified records.
- Confirm the primary owner and approved managers.
- Remove former employees and agencies that no longer require access.
- Move ownership away from unmanaged personal accounts.
- Record the recovery process for critical accounts.
Access issues should be treated as infrastructure risk. A perfectly optimized profile is still vulnerable if the organization cannot reliably manage it.
2. Validate the core business data
Compare the displayed name, address, map pin, phone number, hours and website URL with the organization’s source of truth. Check holiday hours and temporary closures separately. For service-area businesses, verify that the address and coverage settings follow the actual operating model.
3. Review categories and services
Select the most accurate primary category rather than the broadest category. Secondary categories and service lists should reflect what the location genuinely offers. Avoid adding services that only exist at another branch, because that creates poor customer experiences and misleading local relevance.
4. Inspect conversion paths
Test every phone number, appointment link, menu, product link and website destination on mobile. Send profile traffic to the most relevant page—not automatically to the homepage. Use consistent campaign parameters where appropriate so profile actions can be identified in analytics.
5. Evaluate photos, posts and questions
Images should help customers recognize the location, entrance, environment, products or team. Replace outdated brand assets and monitor user-uploaded images. Review public questions for unanswered operational details and publish updates only when they add timely value.
6. Analyse reviews as operational data
Sample recent positive, neutral and negative reviews. Look for recurring themes involving service speed, staff behaviour, availability, directions, pricing clarity or digital support. Confirm that responses are professional, specific and free from sensitive customer information.
7. Check website alignment
The linked location page should repeat accurate contact details, explain local services, provide directions and include an obvious action. It should also be crawlable, indexable, fast and connected to the wider service architecture.
Prioritize findings by risk and value
Classify issues as critical, high, medium or low. Ownership loss, suspended profiles, incorrect locations and broken conversion links deserve immediate attention. Minor description improvements can follow once the network is accurate and secure.
